The Sonder Effect is the realization that each random passerby is living a life as complex as your own. I wanted to capture the Sonder Effect of 20.08.2022 because it is my birthday, a significant day to me but not to others. I had 60 people find a forgotten memory on their phone to tell me about. A date choice grounds the project by creating a commonality between the collected memories, but keeps it playful since it is likely a random day to others.
I made two publications: the white left bound, showing the phones in chronological order of time the photograph was captured, and the black right bound, reading reversed to show the reflection process when participants wrote about the specified memory. The yellow clamshell bookcase is inspired by a sleeve phone-case with “bank cards” summarising the project. The yellow was chosen by approximately 80% of the participants as they felt it encapsulated the feeling of the month of August best.
